Born in Hanoi into an intellectual family, she graduated from Hanoi Medical University and volunteered to work in the battlefield during the Vietnam War. In 1966, she was assigned to a field hospital in Quảng Ngãi Province, where she treated countless wounded soldiers and civilians under extremely harsh conditions.
Despite shortages of medicine, equipment, and constant danger from bombings, she showed remarkable courage and compassion. Beyond her role as a doctor, Đặng Thùy Trâm was also a diarist. Her journals, written with honesty and deep humanity, captured the struggles, hopes, and ideals of a young woman devoted to her country and her patients.
On June 22, 1970, at the age of only 27, she was killed by U.S. forces while protecting the wounded. Her diaries were preserved by an American intelligence officer, Fred Whitehurst, who later returned them to her family. Published in 2005 under the title Last Night I Dreamed of Peace, they moved millions of readers worldwide.
Today, Đặng Thùy Trâm is remembered not only as a heroic doctor but also as a symbol of love, resilience, and faith in humanity.
