Writing Tip: Using “Let’s…” and “How about + V-ing?” in an Informal Invitation Letter
When writing an informal invitation (to invite a friend to do something), you can make the invitation sound friendly and natural by using:
1. “Let’s + verb…”
Use this to suggest an activity you and the reader can do together.
Examples:
Let’s go to the beach this weekend.
Let’s meet at my house around 5 p.m.
This form makes your invitation more warm and encouraging.
2. “How about + V-ing…?”
Use this to make a suggestion in a polite, friendly way.
Examples:
How about having a picnic by the river?
How about watching a movie after dinner?
This form is softer and gives the reader a choice.
I'm having a small party at my place this Saturday evening, and I'd love for you to come!
We'll be starting around 6 PM. I’ll be cooking some simple food, but feel free to bring anything you'd like to drink. We can play some board games and just hang out.
How about you come over a little early, maybe around 5:30, and help me set up?
Let's make it a fun evening before the busy exam week starts!
Hope you can make it!
