Moving on to the next question, in my opinion, the primary reason for its appearance is that Tet is a special occasion for family reunions as well as for celebrating the arrival of spring.
To celebrate the New Year, we do lots of things together. Before New Year’s Eve, we prepare some local specialties, such as Chung cake, Vietnamese sausage and dried candied fruits to worship our ancestors and then enjoy during Tet. Houses are thoroughly cleaned out and then nicely furnished in the hopes of getting rid of the past year’s bad lucks. Additionally, many families usually decorate their houses with Kumquat trees, Apricot or Peach blossom and parallel sentences that are believed to bring luckiness, happiness and prosperity to them in the New Year.
All members in a family gather together and have parties to ring in the New Year. During Tet, there are a lot of customs practiced, such as giving lucky money to children, visiting friends’ houses and going to churches, temples or pagodas to make good prays for their family.
If there’s time left, I would like to explain its importance to our culture and me. With Vietnamese, Tet is vital as it’s a very meaningful tradition to welcome the New Year. And it’s more important because Tet is the time for families and relatives to gather under the same roof for rekindling love and bonding. For me, I always long for Tet as it’s the longest holiday, which can help me recover my battery after a long working year.
Five years ago, I attended a very big festival in Ha Noi. It's called 1000th Anniversary of Thang Long - Ha Noi Festival. There are a lot of activities in this festival such as fireworks display, military parade, music performances, ect. It was organized very splendidly because the organizers are the Viet Nam government. Millions of people came to Ha Noi to participate in this great festival. It was held for ten days from October 1st 2015 to October 10th 2015. I saw lots of fireworks, parties, parades during these days. It was interesting. I took so many pictures on this festival because there were plenty of beautiful scenes. We organized this great festival to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long - Ha Noi.

Tet, also known as Lunar New Year festival, is one of the biggest traditional festivals in Viet Nam. Tet usually starts at the end of January and ends in early February. Tet has 3 main days; however, it often takes Vietnamese people a week to prepare beforehand. They clean their house and decorate it with flowers and trees such as a kumquat tree or peach blossom. A huge amount of food ingredients will be bought before Tet to make traditional dishes. Banh Chung, Gio cha, Banh Tet, Xoi Mut,… and candies are the foods that could be easily seen on Tet holidays. During the 3 main days of Tet, people visit their relatives’ houses and give them wishes. However, Vietnamese people believe that the first visitor a family welcomes in the year may affect their fortune for the entire year. Therefore, people never enter any houses on the first day of Lunar New Year without being invited first. Another traditional custom is giving lucky money, which is put into a red envelope as a symbol of luck and wish for a new age, to children and the elders. Besides, after the first 3 days, Vietnamese usually go to pagodas or temples to pray for wealth, health, success,… To Vietnamese, Tet is the happiest period of the year round because members in a family can gather and celebrate Tet together. Generally, Tet is all about going back home, being nice to others, enjoying the precious moment, and wishing for the best things to come.
