When we use the word "career" to talk about a person's working life, we mean that he or she has had a series of jobs in the same field, for example, banking, usually with a number of promotions, so the person has risen to a certain level by the time of retirement. [1] There are two other ways of looking at a career now, and each one could be called a "portfolio career".
The usual meaning of "portfolio" is a collection of drawings, photographs, or documents which, taken together, represent a person's work. Artists, photographers, and actors typically compile portfolios to take to job interviews. [2] They are better than a resume for showing what they have done or what they are capable of doing.
One meaning of a portfolio career is having a number of part-time jobs or roles at the same time, instead of one full-time job. These jobs may or may not be in the same field. In fact, it is probably better if they are not. We'll see why later. The second meaning of the term is having several full-time jobs in different fields during your lifetime which have something in common, for example, managing people. At one time it was thought that only a doctor, for instance, could manage the work of doctors. [3] But recently, there has been a move to see some skills, such as personnel management, as cutting across fields, so a person could transfer their skills in management learned in healthcare to, let's say, education. It is worth saying here that many people in different professions disagree with this idea, believing that only a person who understands the day-to-day work of a profession can be a manager in that profession, but it has become common in certain fields in a number of countries. [4]
Why should there be any advantage in having a number of jobs at the same time or in having a transferable skill? The issue is that, in today's world, jobs and even the nature of work itself are changing very fast. People in many parts of the world can no longer expect to get a job for life in one organization or even one field. One estimate from experts is that a person graduating from university or college now will work in at least four different fields during their lifetime.
Having a portfolio career of either type defined above can be a good choice, because it makes you flexible. You can adapt to changes more easily, and you are more open to learning new skills. It's also great for people who have many interests or talents and don't want to choose just one career path
