ROBOTS
A. Nowadays, we have many smart devices that do a lot of work for us. Factories use robot arms, and we do our banking at machines called ATMs. Subways are driven by automated systems, and machines dig mine shafts. Some robots can even handle dangerous nuclear accidents. The word "robot" was created by a Czech playwright named Karel Capek in 1920, and it means "forced labour" in Czech.
B. New inventions are making us more efficient and skilled. Micro-devices allow robot systems to finish brain and bone surgeries with rare mistakes. They can do better than doctors using only their hands. Also, we can control things from a distance to keep people safe. In 1994, a NASA robot named Dante, equipped with video cameras and spider-like legs, explored an Alaskan volcano. Scientists 2,000 miles away in California watched and guided Dante through satellites.
C. If robots are to save our work, they must work with less human control and make some decisions on their own. This is a big challenge. One expert says, "We know how to tell a robot to solve a specific problem, but we can't give it enough practical knowledge to handle a changing world." Real AI has had mixed results. In the 1960s and 1970s, there was hope that microprocessors could work like the human brain by the 21st century, but recent research has pushed these predictions back by decades or even centuries.
D. Researchers have found that the human brain, with about one hundred billion neurons, is much more skilled and complex than previously thought. Robots have been made to find small machine errors in controlled factory settings. However, the human mind can quickly understand a changing scene and focus on what's important. Even the most advanced computer systems can't do this, and neuroscientists still don't fully understand how we do it.

Exercise 3: Read the passage and answer questions below.
A. A UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) is any object flying in the sky which cannot be identified by the person who sees it. Sometimes this kind of object is investigated. If people can still not figure out what the object is after investigating, it is called a UFO. If they figure out what the object is, it can no longer be called a UFO because it has been identified.
B. UFOs can be anything, but people often use the word "UFO" when they are talking about aliens. Aliens are beings from other planets not Earth. When talking about aliens and UFO, people tend to think about Mars or Venus. Many people believe that aliens are so intelligent that they can create UFOs to come to other planets, while some think they visit different planets to invade and settle down.
C. Studies estimate that 50%-90% of all reported UFO sightings are identified later. Usually 10%-20% are never identified. Studies also show that very few UFO sightings are hoaxes (people trying to trick other people). Most UFOs are actually natural or man-made objects that look strange. 80%-90% UFOs are identified as one of three different things: astronomical causes (for example: planets, stars, or meteors); aircraft; balloons 10%-20% of UFOs are other causes (such as birds, clouds, mirages, searchlights, etc.)
